Super Dog
Mondays are rest days for me, and I decided to take Kelty to Vetran's Park so she could get some unleashed run time in. The poor dog has been cooped up in the apartment because it has been too hot to take her on any run lasting longer than 10 minutes. It's still hot today, but I brought lots of water and figured we could leave if she did start to get too hot.
I open the car door and, as Gary puts it, she was like a cougar being let out of a cage. As I watched her take off I realized that my dog's one true passion is to run. I think she might even pass up people food to be in running in an open field. She would circle back to me panting and looking at me as if to say, did you see that? Did you see how fast I am? Watch me go do it again!
I started thinking about what my neighbor said to me the other day. Kelty was doing her usual sprints in front of the apartment complex and my neighbor said, "Kelty is the perfect dog for you and Gary because you all like to exercise so much". I've loved the fact that Kelty is a runner and I can take her with me when I go, but I am starting to realize some of our similarities.
How I am like my dog:
She loves running for the sake of running. Kelty will play fetch in the house all day long if you keep throwing the ball, but if you bring the ball outside and throw it she will run after it and just keep running. Like me, sometimes she likes to run just because she can, and it feels good, and it's fun. No distractions needed.
She runs even though she is tired. That dog's tongue can be hanging to the ground and she will keep running. I don't think my tongue hangs like Kelty's, but there are times when I am pretty tired, but I keep going to get my time in, or to finish a workout. Definitely different motivations for the two of us. Funny though, we both seem to do the same thing when we are hot and tired. Slow down and look for some shade.

How I am not like my dog:
I don't think I get the foamy mouth and streaming drool. Or do I?
I am not faster than a squirrel.
I don't stop running to roll in stink if I find it on my route.
And I cannot pass out 5 minutes after I am done running.

I know this is a silly post, but I just thought it was interesting how the joy of running can be found in some unexpected places.

how cute!
not silly at all! while riley doesn't run quite as much anymore, she is still happiest outside or sleeping on the couch. i have a great picture, but can't figure out how to post it in this comment.
cute puppy! It will be nice when I can get a dog to run with. The dogs my parents had were never interested in running. They would make it as far as the porch and then take a nap.
Silly post but cute :) It would be funny if a runner did stop to roll on the ground now wouldn't it? :)
nikki,
what are you eating in that picture. is it cereal in the morning? frosted mini wheats, lucky charms? or is it chicken noodle soup? ice cream? or a bowl of corn, cause sometimes a bowl of corn is goood .
